Beef Brisket

Beef brisket is a traditional protein served during Hanukkah. 2016 sees Hanukkah being celebrated later in the month of December, where it coincides with Christmas. This could mean a busy week for those households where both holidays are celebrated.

In order to simplify the holidays, if only by a little, we offer a recipe for a Hanukkah meal of beef brisket made in a slow cooker. As brisket likes to be cooked low and slow, the slow cooker is perfect for the job. Not to mention, it gives you some time for other holiday preparations while the slow cooker does most of the work.

Holidays can be a very difficult time for anyone trying to lose weight, and gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, gastric band patients are no exception. Foods that are traditional during Hanukkah are often fried foods, such as potato latkes and doughnuts, as observers pay homage to the single cruse of olive oil that lasted eight days.

Bariatric patients are typically encouraged to avoid fried foods in favor of baked, grilled, or roasted foods in an effort to reduce overall calories and promote weight loss. While avoiding all fried foods may be very hard to do during Hanukkah, we encourage our patients observing the holiday to remember to focus on eating their protein first, try to incorporate fresh vegetables and fruits, and consume fried foods in moderation.

Slow Cooker Beef Brisket

Ingredients:

  • 3 lbs beef brisket
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Worchestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper

Directions:

  • Take out your brisket and pat it dry. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper.
  • Sear brisket over medium-high heat in a deep saute pan. Once a golden brown crust appears on both sides, place into the slow cooker, fatty side up. If you are pressed for time, you can skip this step. It isn’t necessary to cook the brisket, but it helps add a depth of flavor that makes it extra delicious.
  • Add remaining ingredients to the slow cooker.
  • Cook on low for 6-8 hours.
  • Let the brisket rest for an additional 20 minutes before slicing and serving.
  • You can top it with cooking juices for extra flavor.
