Am I a Candidate?
There are a number of widely accepted criteria which can make a patient a candidate for bariatric or weight loss surgery. Different insurance companies often have different conditions for bariatric coverage, which may be dependent on BMI and other health conditions. Below is a general guideline for bariatric candidates for gastric sleeve, gastric bypasss:
- Over the age of 18
- Reasonable prior attempts at other weight loss techniques
- A capacity to understand the risks and commitment associated with the surgery
- Pregnancy not anticipated in the first two years following surgery
For self pay patients:
- BMI above 32
For those utilizing insurance coverage:
- BMI above 40
- BMI between 35.0-39.9, with one or more of the following documented medical comorbidities: Type 2 diabetes, High Blood Pressure, or Sleep Apnea
