If you are trying to cut back on both calories and carbohydrates to lose weight and feel better, bread is often the first things people cut out. But sometimes gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and lap band patients just want to eat a sandwich.
Introducing Cloud Bread, which functions as bread but isn’t made with flour at all. It will make light and fluffy round, white “slices” that can stand up to sandwich making. This egg based recipe has less than 40 calories per “slice,” so it can easily fit into a post bariatric surgery diet. You’ll have to have the time to whip these up, bake, and cool them, but for those craving bread without wanting all of the refined carbohydrates, this can be a good alternative.
Once cooled, the Cloud Bread can function liked sliced bread. You could:
- spread peanut butter or almond butter and top with sliced bananas
- have a turkey and cheese sandwich
- make an open faced tuna sandwich
- use it to make an individual pizza
- spread hummus on it and sprinkle with shredded carrots or roasted red peppers
- make a sandwich of your own creation
Just because they are lower in calories and carbohydrates than regular bread does not mean you can eat as many as you want. All calories count, including those from healthy sources, so remember to watch your overall calories for the day in order to ensure weight loss after gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or gastric band surgery.
The above is offered by Dr. Shillingford, M.D., P.A., a board certified surgeon specializing in advanced laparoscopic and obesity surgery. Dr. Shillingford’s gastric sleeve, lap band, and gastric bypass patients come to his Boca Raton office from both South Florida and Northern Florida, as well as Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Hawaii. His weight loss surgery patients are often looking to explore new and different foods as well as incorporating variety into their post bariatric surgery diets. Cloud Bread can help add a little variety and help patients stick with their lower carbohydrate lifestyle.
