Which is a Better Time to Work Out- Morning or Night?

It’s an age old question: Which time of day is best for working out? Some claim morning, some swear by night. But what’s the truth?

Scientifically speaking, there is some evidence that morning workouts have a benefit. A recent small study provided evidence that working out in the morning before eating breakfast can lead to not gaining weight if you eat more than your usual diet. The study was small and short, only done on men, and did not show any weight loss, so it’s not that easy to make any claims from it. But it is interesting.

Another factor to look at is how our bodies are affected by sunlight. Getting out in the bright sunlight within two hours of waking seems to have a positive effect on weight management. But, again, the study was not conducted in the gold standard scientific way to make claims based on the results, so it’s more like just some possibly interesting information.

Really, to answer the question of which time of day is best to work out, the largest factor to consider is which time is most conducive to consistent, well performed workouts. That answer is going to vary from person to person. For some, mornings work best and for others hitting the gym then taking a shower before bed is better. It will depend on your family dynamics, work schedule, and personal preferences.

Whichever time of day you choose to work out, be sure to make exercise a consistent part of your post bariatric surgery lifestyle. Along with following your prescribed diet after gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or lap band surgery, exercise will be key to weight loss, reductions in blood sugar, lowering blood pressure, improving your strength and mobility, and improving stress levels. Be sure to get the official OK to begin an exercise regime from Dr. Shillingford at your follow up appointment after gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, or gastric band surgery. Once you’ve been cleared for exercise, decide what time of day best fits in with your new post bariatric surgery lifestyle and stick with it for maximum weight loss results.
